State Farm Issues Record $5 Billion Auto Insurance Dividend
State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company is distributing a record $5 billion cash-back dividend to over 49 million qualifying auto insurance policyholders.
State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company began distributing a $5 billion one-time cash-back dividend on July 31, marking the largest payout in the company's century-long history. The dividend applies to policyholders who held qualifying personal auto insurance policies at any point in 2025, including those who have since switched insurers, provided the payout is at least $10. The distribution covers more than 49 million vehicles with an average payout of $100 per vehicle.
Individual refund amounts range from 4% to 10% of the 2025 premium paid, with variations based on state insurance regulations. The company is distributing payments in waves by state, a process expected to take several months. Over 7.2 million checks have already been mailed. Eligible customers are notified via email or letter and can choose between physical checks or digital payments through Zelle, Venmo, and PayPal via a dedicated portal.
State Farm attributes the payout to its financial strength and stronger-than-expected underwriting performance in 2025. The company stated that receiving the dividend will not increase future insurance rates. Separately, State Farm has reduced auto rates by an average of 10% in 40 states, resulting in $4.6 billion in total customer savings due to lower collision frequency and repair costs. The company has warned customers to remain vigilant against scams, noting it will not request passwords or charge fees to process the dividend.
