Big Tech Loses $900 Billion Amid Record AI Spending

Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, and Microsoft lost $900 billion in market value as investors questioned the returns on $201.9 billion in quarterly AI infrastructure spending.

Four of the world's largest technology companies—Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, and Microsoft—reached a record combined capital expenditure of $201.9 billion in the third quarter of 2026. This represents a $36.9 billion increase over the previous quarter, driven by aggressive investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Despite reporting strong earnings and growth in cloud services, the companies faced massive investor sell-offs that erased $900 billion in aggregate market value. Alphabet suffered the most significant loss, with its market capitalization dropping by $500 billion following a 13 percent decline in share price. Investors expressed concern that the scale of AI spending is outpacing revenue growth and draining free cash flow, thereby reducing the capital available for share buybacks and dividends.

Financial strain appeared across the group. Microsoft announced the issuance of $25 billion in corporate debt to cover funding gaps, while Alphabet reported a 25 percent drop in net income. Amazon reported negative free cash flow of $7.604 billion for the year ending June 30, with its Q3 capital expenditures of $75.9 billion exceeding its operating cash flow by $33.5 billion. Despite the market reaction, all four companies forecast that AI capital spending will continue or increase into 2027.
