DUP Blocks Joint Engagements With First Minister Michelle O'Neill

Democratic Unionist Party leader Gavin Robinson suspended joint government engagements with First Minister Michelle O'Neill following a police investigation into an unlawful protest in Portadown.

Democratic Unionist Party leader Gavin Robinson announced that deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly will cease all joint engagements with First Minister Michelle O'Neill. The decision follows police investigations into O'Neill and other Sinn Féin members for participating in an unnotified protest on the Garvaghy Road in Portadown on September 27, which attempted to block an Orange Order parade.

As a result of the suspension, Northern Ireland will lack representation at an Economic Forum in Glasgow, where O'Neill was scheduled to meet British Prime Minister Andy Burnham and the First Ministers of Scotland and Wales. Northern Ireland Secretary Sir Chris Bryant expressed frustration that the executive would not be represented at the meeting. Robinson also claimed the DUP blocked O'Neill from meeting Irish President Catherine Connolly on October 6, though the President's office stated the lunch was postponed at the request of the Executive Office.

O'Neill condemned the move as a "reactive stunt" and "supremacist," claiming the DUP is driven by internal turmoil. While some DUP members, including MP Carla Lockhart, called for Little-Pengelly's full withdrawal from the Stormont Executive, Robinson resisted these calls to avoid collapsing the devolved administration. The suspension of joint activities extends to next month's Remembrance Sunday service at Belfast City Hall.
