Elon Musk Pivots SpaceX Toward AI-Driven Business Model

CEO Elon Musk announced that Space Exploration Technologies Corp. is transitioning from a launch provider into an artificial intelligence outfit. During an address to employees, Musk predicted that AI will constitute 99% of the company's value within five years. He stated that AI revenue is expected to exceed all other SpaceX revenue streams by September 2026, with significant growth projected for the fourth quarter.

SpaceX recently reported AI revenue of $2.6 billion, a 213% sequential increase, and has secured $14.1 billion in contracted cloud services agreements with partners including Google and Anthropic. To accelerate this pivot, the company acquired the AI coding platform Cursor for $60 billion. SpaceX also plans to scale its AI compute capacity from 1.4 gigawatts to 10 gigawatts by the end of 2027, a move Musk estimates could generate between $300 billion and $500 billion in annual revenue.

Infrastructure plans include the construction of Terafab, a $16.8 billion semiconductor manufacturing complex in Grimes County, Texas, developed in partnership with Tesla. The company is investing in Nvidia's Vera Rubin architecture to power its AI stack. Further ambitions include launching a million Starmind AI satellites via Starship and establishing lunar factories to build off-Earth data centers and electromagnetic mass drivers for satellite launches from the moon.
