City of London Drafts Process to Strip Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor's Honor

The City of London Corporation is drafting a new legal process to strip Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor of the Freedom of the City of London. The honor, granted to him in 2012 via patrimony through Prince Philip, became a point of contention after Andrew refused to voluntarily relinquish the privilege in April. In May, the Court of Common Council passed a motion of censure, describing his association with Jeffrey Epstein as "wholly unacceptable and inconsistent" with the status of a freeman.

Legal officials concluded that existing disenfranchisement processes are defunct, prompting the drafting of an Act of Common Council. This mechanism would allow the Corporation to revoke the honor directly without seeking legislation through Parliament. The draft bill will be presented to the Policy and Resources Committee in September and the Court of Common Council in October, with a formal vote to follow in the next cycle.

These actions follow a broader collapse of Andrew's royal standing. King Charles III stripped him of his royal titles and privileges in October 2025, and the monarch is expected to exclude him from the annual summer gathering at Balmoral due to "considerable sensitivities." Andrew currently resides at Marsh Farm on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk. He remains under investigation after a February arrest on suspicion of misconduct in public office regarding allegations that he shared sensitive information with Epstein while serving as a UK trade envoy, though he denies all wrongdoing.
