Carnival Cruise Line to Halve Australian Fleet by 2028

Carnival Cruise Line will withdraw two ships from the Australian market by March 2028, citing high operating costs and regulatory uncertainty.

Carnival Cruise Line will halve its Australian fleet by March 2028, withdrawing the Carnival Luminosa and Carnival Adventure from the local market. The Carnival Luminosa is scheduled for its final Sydney departure on March 15, 2028, followed by the Carnival Adventure on March 20, 2028. Both vessels will subsequently undergo dry dock refreshments in Singapore.

The company attributed the reduction to high operating costs, global competition, and a lack of long-term regulatory certainty regarding cruise licensing in Australia and New Zealand. While the Parliament of Australia recently extended the cruise industry's exemption from the Coastal Trading Act until December 2028, Carnival officials characterized this as an interim step that does not resolve long-term planning concerns.

Carnival will maintain a year-round presence with the Carnival Splendor and Carnival Encounter, operating from Sydney and Brisbane. This move follows similar market retreats by Disney, Virgin Voyages, and Cunard. While industry experts warn the cutback may increase fares and reduce capacity, the Maritime Union of Australia claims the decision is a negotiating tactic, noting that Carnival ships lack collective crew agreements.
