Apple Develops New Apple Pencils With Replaceable Batteries
Apple is developing two new Apple Pencil models with user-replaceable batteries to comply with European Union regulations by February 2027.
Apple is developing two new Apple Pencil models, codenamed B582 and B632, scheduled for release in the first half of 2027. The lineup includes a successor to the entry-level USB-C Apple Pencil and an updated version of the Apple Pencil Pro. These devices will likely debut alongside a refresh of the iPad Pro.
The primary driver for the redesign is the European Union Batteries Regulation. Specifically, Article 11 requires that portable batteries in consumer electronics be readily removable and replaceable by the end user by February 2027. Current Apple Pencil models utilize heavy internal adhesives that make battery replacement nearly impossible, necessitating a significant reworking of internal components.
These hardware updates are part of a broader 2027 product roadmap. This cycle may include redesigned iPad Pro models featuring updated Apple silicon and AI capabilities, as well as a redesigned entry-level MacBook Pro. While the battery changes are the central focus of the reports, it remains unclear if the new styluses will include additional feature upgrades. Apple has not officially confirmed these development plans.
