Sudan and Ethiopia Exchange Accusations Over Rebel Support

The Sudanese Armed Forces rejected accusations from Ethiopia's military chief, Field Marshal Birhanu Jula, that Sudan is supporting an alliance of armed groups seeking to overthrow Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's government. Birhanu Jula claimed that the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), the Oromo Liberation Army, and the Amhara Fano National Movement are being supplied by Sudan, Egypt, and other external powers.

These accusations followed the TPLF's capture of the strategic town of Erebti in the Afar region. In response, the Sudanese military described the claims as baseless and accused Ethiopia of providing training, supplies, and territory for the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), specifically citing the use of suicide and long-range drones.

Regional tensions have further escalated as Eritrea's Information Minister Yemane Meskel accused Ethiopia of shifting blame for the conflict, linking the instability to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's pursuit of sovereign access to the seaport of Assab. While Egypt and Eritrea also denied supporting the TPLF, Doctors Without Borders reported a surge in wounded patients at hospitals in Korem, Alamata, and Suhul, signaling a significant escalation in violence despite a 2022 peace deal signed in Pretoria.
