Space Force Awards SpaceX $2.29 Billion Satellite Contract

The United States Space Force awarded SpaceX a $2.29 billion fixed-price contract to develop the Space Data Network (SDN) Backbone. This high-speed, low-latency satellite communications network utilizes Starshield satellites, a defense-hardened version of Starlink, to create a proliferated constellation in low Earth orbit. The infrastructure is designed to link missile-warning sensors and interceptors in near real time, serving as the foundational communications layer for the Golden Dome missile defense initiative to detect and destroy ballistic, hypersonic, and cruise missiles.

Formerly known as Milnet, the SDN Backbone will integrate with the Space Development Agency's Transport Layer to establish a unified, open architecture for Department of Defense missions. SpaceX is tasked with delivering a fully operational prototype by the end of 2027.

While the Pentagon describes the program as multi-vendor, SpaceX is currently the sole provider. The Space Force intends to expand its industrial partner pool by selecting additional contractors for other network components and satellite construction through an SDN consortium over the summer. The award precedes a planned SpaceX IPO roadshow scheduled to begin June 8.
