SpaceX and Blue Origin Plan Orbital AI Data Centers
SpaceX, Blue Origin, and Google LLC are planning orbital data centers to leverage solar power and reduce costs, sparking growth and risk concerns in space insurance.
Major technology and space firms are planning to move data center infrastructure into orbit to utilize solar power and lower terrestrial operating costs. Space Exploration Technologies Corp. has filed with the Federal Communications Commission for a constellation of up to 1 million satellites to create an orbital AI data center. CEO Elon Musk predicts that space computing could become cheaper than Earth-based options within three years.
Other industry leaders are pursuing similar goals. Blue Origin has filed plans for 51,600 satellites, with founder Jeff Bezos stating that space-based data centers are "very realistic." Google LLC is exploring Project Suncatcher, a network of solar-powered satellites using AI chips, while the startup Starcloud has already successfully flown an Nvidia H100 GPU in orbit.
This shift presents a multibillion-dollar growth opportunity for the space insurance market, which currently generates between $500 million and $750 million in annual premiums. However, Swiss Reinsurance Company CEO Andreas Berger warns that sustainable pricing remains difficult because the industry cannot yet quantify risks related to radiation, space debris, and launch failures in an unregulated environment.
