Hyundai Considers Expanding Georgia Plant to 800,000 Units
Hyundai Motor is evaluating an increase in production capacity at its Georgia Metaplant to counter U.S. tariffs and localize vehicle manufacturing.
Hyundai Motor Company is considering expanding the production capacity of its Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America in Georgia from 500,000 units to between 700,000 and 800,000 units by 2028. If implemented, the facility would become the largest vehicle assembly operation by capacity in the United States.
CEO José Muñoz stated the potential increase is part of a $26 billion U.S. investment plan. The company aims to produce at least 80% of the vehicles it sells in the U.S. domestically by 2030. Muñoz noted that tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump, including a 15% tariff on South Korean imports, have accelerated these localization efforts.
While the company is evaluating these capacity increases and additional investments for body-on-frame vehicles, Hyundai clarified that the plans remain under consideration and are not yet confirmed.
