Nyesom Wike Orders Demolitions After Severe Abuja Flooding

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike ordered the demolition of structures on water channels after heavy rainfall caused severe flooding across Abuja's residential and commercial districts.

Heavy rainfall on August 16, 2026, caused severe flooding across Abuja, affecting districts including Maitama, Wuse 2, and the Central Business District. The disaster sparked a political dispute over urban planning, with lawyer Deji Adeyanju and Senator Ireti Kingibe accusing the administration of disregarding the city's master plan by allowing construction on green areas and floodplains.

Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, responded by ordering the immediate demolition of all structures obstructing natural water channels. Beginning August 19 in the Maitama District, the Federal Capital Territory Administration started pulling down buildings, with Wike asserting that the exercise would not spare influential citizens or serving senators. He attributed the flooding to a combination of climate change, illegal construction, and poor waste disposal, while denying that his administration had allocated land on waterways for development.

While the FCT Administration defended the minister by stating that flooding is a long-standing issue predating Wike's tenure, Senator Kingibe claimed she had warned the minister about blocked drainage and illegal construction as early as December 2025. Conversely, Philip Agbese of the House of Representatives defended Wike, arguing that residents share responsibility for blocking drainage channels with refuse. To prevent future occurrences, the administration is reviewing the 1979 Abuja Master Plan and deploying reinforced drainage covers.
