US Army Mandates 180-Day Integration Period for Drone Tech

The United States Army has established a 180-day requirement for deploying new technology, specifically drones, to ensure soldiers master equipment before entering combat training. This temporal threshold is designed to prevent soldiers from being distracted by unfamiliar systems during force-on-force operations, allowing them to focus on fighting the enemy rather than learning hardware.

While drones are integrated into basic training and most squads have experience with the systems, officials emphasize that turning equipment into real capability requires regular repetition. During the Project Convergence Capstone exercise in July at Fort Irwin, some soldiers reportedly avoided pushing drones to their limits to ensure the equipment remained operational for further practice.

As part of a broader shift toward force-wide integration, the Army is phasing out its experimental Unmanned Assault Battalion in the 173rd Airborne Brigade. Leadership argues that disseminating drone lessons across the entire force is more effective than centralizing expertise within a single specialized unit.
