Pakistan Telecom Regulator Limits Price Hikes After 33 Percent Increases
Pakistan Telecommunication Authority implements new quarterly price limits and transparency tools after major mobile operators raised call and data package costs by up to 33 percent.
Major Pakistani mobile network operators Jazz, Zong, Ufone, and Telenor have increased prices for call and data packages, with some annual hikes reaching 33 percent. Price increases vary by bundle duration: monthly hybrid packages rose by as much as Rs 500, 15-day bundles by up to Rs 300, weekly packages by up to Rs 130, and short-term bundles by up to Rs 21.
In response, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority updated the Consumer Awareness section of its website to provide detailed tariff sheets for the top 15 hybrid and data-only bundles. This allow users to compare quarterly pricing and incentives across different operators. The regulator also mandated that operators provide clearer access to Value Added Services through specific USSD codes to help users manage and deactivate unwanted subscriptions.
To prevent frequent revisions, the regulator implemented a new policy requiring operators to seek prior approval for tariff increases and limiting such hikes to once per quarter. The authority stated that safeguarding consumer interests and promoting transparency in the telecommunications sector remain its top priorities.
