UN Reports 310,000 Displaced in Yemen Amid Taiz Fighting
The United Nations reports nearly 310,000 people displaced in Yemen since August as renewed fighting in Taiz blocks essential supplies and waste services.
The United Nations reports that nearly 310,000 people in Yemen have been displaced from their homes since August. In the besieged city of Taiz, renewed fighting has blocked roads and supply lines, causing the prices of essential goods to increase up to fivefold.
This blockade has halted waste collection, leaving piles of trash across the city and increasing the risk of disease. UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric noted that trucks have been prevented from reaching dumping sites and called for the protection of civilians and unimpeded humanitarian access to isolated communities.
Violence has also targeted medical infrastructure. UNICEF reported an attack on the Al-Suqyah Health Center in Lahj Governorate that killed five people, including healthcare workers. While the UN High Commissioner for Refugees has provided food, cash assistance, and relief kits in areas including Aden and Abyan, tens of thousands of families still lack shelter and basic household items.
