Meta and Microsoft Cut Internal Use of Anthropic AI

Meta Platforms and Microsoft are reducing internal reliance on Anthropic's Claude AI to prioritize their own proprietary artificial intelligence tools and lower operating costs.

Meta Platforms and Microsoft are scaling back their internal use of Anthropic's Claude AI technology to favor their own proprietary tools. Microsoft has reduced its projected internal spending on Anthropic by more than a third from an initial $1 billion estimate, directing employees to use Microsoft's own AI offerings to cut costs.

Meta has seen internal usage of Claude Code drop from 60,000 to roughly 30,000 employees. While spring layoffs of about 10% of the workforce contributed to this decline, the company is primarily driving the shift through its own AI ecosystem, which includes the MetaCode internal tool and the Muse Spark model line. Meta also began external testing for Muse Code, a direct competitor to Claude Code, in August.

These reductions are limited to internal operations. Microsoft reports that customer spending on Anthropic models through its enterprise platforms continues to grow.
