GMB Union Seeks Formal Recognition at Octopus Energy

The GMB union is seeking formal voluntary recognition for employees at Octopus Energy, the largest energy company in the United Kingdom. GMB regional energy officer Tony Tanushi stated that workers feel powerless and voiceless, arguing that the company's employee share scheme does not provide a genuine platform for feedback on terms and conditions similar to those offered by competitors.

Octopus Energy has rejected the claim that it is anti-union, asserting that there is currently no demand from staff for recognition. A company spokesperson described the firm as an outstanding employer, highlighting that all staff members are shareholders. The company further accused GMB of jeopardizing thousands of jobs by opposing the rollout of electric vehicles and heat pumps.

Supporting the union's push, Greenpeace UK argued that unionized, well-paid jobs are essential to ensuring a secure transition from the fossil fuel industry to a low-carbon economy. Tanushi indicated that the union is prepared to seek arbitration if the proposal for voluntary recognition is not accepted.
