Barclays Employees Protest New Three-Day Office Mandate

Barclays is facing a backlash from thousands of employees following a new return-to-office mandate scheduled to take effect in October. The policy increases the current two-day weekly requirement, mandating that staff work from physical locations at least three days a week, while senior employees must attend at least four days.

Employees, represented by the Unite union, have responded by signing an open letter. The protesters are demanding exemptions for staff with commutes exceeding 40 minutes and payouts to cover increased travel costs. Unite, which represents nearly 80% of the bank's 45,000 UK staff, argues that the bank is ignoring flexibility trends prevalent across the financial services sector.

Barclays has defended the move, stating that the requirements balance flexibility for colleagues with the importance of working together in physical locations to ensure collaboration and leadership visibility.
