Romania Maintains 25% Diesel Excise Duty Reduction

The Ministry of Finance of Romania is maintaining a 25% reduction in the excise duty for standard diesel from September 16 to September 30, 2026. This decision follows a fortnightly assessment mandated by Law No. 162/2026, which allows the government to adjust taxes based on international quotations and domestic pump prices to mitigate economic pressure.

The reduction amounts to 701.07 lei per 1,000 litres, leaving the effective excise duty at 2,103.22 lei per 1,000 litres. The ministry cited a 51.19% increase in Platts diesel quotations and a 27.47% rise in average pump prices as the primary drivers for continuing the intervention.

This measure continues a previous intervention implemented in the first half of September. The ministry stated the action seeks to limit the knock-on effect of fuel costs, particularly in transport and logistics, which directly impacts costs across the economy and consumer goods prices.
