Congress Moves Impeachment Protest to Kharge Residence After Police Block
The Indian National Congress shifted a mock impeachment of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to Mallikarjun Kharge's home after Delhi Police blocked other venues.
The Indian National Congress and the INDIA bloc have shifted a planned public impeachment of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to the residence of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on October 30. The move follows allegations that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah used the Delhi Police to block the event at the Ashok Hotel and Ramlila Maidan.
Congress general secretary KC Venugopal accused the government of using tricks to silence the opposition and protecting Kumar amid allegations of electoral irregularities and voter deletions. The Delhi Police denied receiving a formal request for the mock impeachment, though they issued a conditional no-objection certificate for a larger rally scheduled for November 1 at Ramlila Maidan. This rally is part of a Dilli Chalo march protesting the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
Tensions have already escalated in New Delhi, with police detaining over 100 demonstrators in the city center. The INDIA bloc continues to demand Kumar's resignation and has threatened to protest outside the residences of Modi and Shah if further obstructions occur.
