China Doubles Tourist Train Operations Amid Shift to Experience Tourism
China State Railway Group nearly doubled its tourist train operations in early 2026 as consumers shift from shopping toward immersive, service-based travel experiences.
China is seeing a surge in experience-based tourism during the summer of 2026, marking a transition from shopping-oriented consumption toward service-based spending. Central to this trend is the train-plus tourism model, which integrates transportation with sightseeing, cultural entertainment, and wellness activities.
China State Railway Group Co., Ltd. reported operating 1,797 tourist trains in the first half of 2026, nearly double the 972 operated during the same period in 2025. The operator also launched 445 themed trains for specific events such as sporting matches and concerts. Regional implementations include Song Dynasty-inspired interiors in Fuzhou, theatrical experiences in Shangrao, and over 70 themed trains in Shaanxi province focusing on study and wellness tours.
This growth aligns with a national five-year plan to expand consumption. In June 2026, the Ministry of Commerce, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and China State Railway Group issued joint guidelines to develop more than 160 dedicated tourist train sets by 2030. Beyond rail, the trend extends to outdoor escapes like camping in Xizang and horseback riding in Inner Mongolia, as well as nighttime cultural experiences such as Peking Opera in Shenyang and river cruises in Tianjin.
