British Institutions Mark 90th Anniversary of Long March

British libraries and archives are highlighting the 90th anniversary of the Long March through historic publications and eyewitness accounts of the Chinese Red Army.

Libraries and archives across Britain are commemorating the 90th anniversary of the Long March, the historic journey of the Chinese Red Army led by the Communist Party of China. The British Library and the Marx Memorial Library in London are showcasing early publications that first introduced the event to Western audiences in the 1930s, including works by Edgar Snow and Agnes Smedley.

In Norwich, the University of East Anglia preserves the archives of Alfred Bosshardt, a British missionary who served as an early eyewitness to the Red Army's discipline and determination. These collections provide a Western perspective on the military movement that shaped modern China.

Writer Sun Shuyun, who spent 14 months retracing the route and interviewing veterans, noted that the journey demonstrated the organizational strength of the Communist Party of China. She stated that the event laid the foundation for the eventual victory of the Chinese revolution.
