Bank of Canada Unveils New $20 Banknote

The Bank of Canada unveiled a new $20 banknote during a ceremony in Ottawa on Thursday. The bill introduces a vertical design featuring a line-work image of King Charles on the front and the Canadian National Vimy Memorial on the back.

Scheduled to enter circulation in February 2027, the note incorporates advanced security measures to combat counterfeiting, including a purple security stripe that spins and transforms when moved. Governor Tiff Macklem stated the new design is more secure than previous versions and represents a continued effort to protect the integrity of the currency system.

Governor-General Louise Arbour spoke on the symbolic nature of the update, noting that the currency reflects national sovereignty and the strength of the Canadian economy.
