US Dollar Strengthens Despite Plunging Consumer Sentiment
The US dollar remains strong due to inflation expectations and geopolitical tensions despite consumer sentiment falling to its lowest level since May.
The US dollar maintains its strength despite a sharp decline in American consumer sentiment, which dropped to 46.3 points in early October. This represents the lowest level of consumer confidence since May, driven primarily by high borrowing costs, expensive fuel, and rising living expenses.
Currency support stems from rising inflation expectations, with consumers forecasting a 4.7% increase over the next year. These conditions have led markets to price in a 71% probability that the Federal Reserve System will implement another interest rate hike in December. Additional upward pressure on the dollar comes from elevated Treasury yields and safe-haven demand resulting from geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
While current spending levels remain relatively strong, more than half of surveyed consumers intend to reduce their purchases. This shift creates a risk that a more severe economic slowdown could eventually reverse the current upward trend of the currency.
