Agile Robots Launches Academy to Train Machines via Humans

Agile Robots is using a Robot Academy to train industrial machines by filming human workers to overcome data shortages in automation.

The Munich-based startup Agile Robots is utilizing a Robot Academy to train industrial machines by filming human workers performing specific tasks. Chief Executive Officer Zhaopeng Chen announced the initiative on October 8 at the Wave by Vento technology event in Turin, Italy, explaining that the company captures hand and finger movements to create training data for robots to practice in simulated environments.

This method aims to solve data shortages that currently prevent industrial robots from mastering basic tasks. Founded in 2018 by researchers from the German Aerospace Center, the company has already deployed over 20,000 systems and raised $1.5 billion in financing.

Agile Robots is reportedly in discussions to raise an additional $800 million, with SoftBank Group Corp. involved in the funding talks. The development comes as other German firms, such as Neura Robotics, also pursue robotic training facilities in partnership with the Technical University of Munich.
