Idaho Refers 15 Noncitizen Voter Cases for Federal Prosecution
Idaho Secretary of State Phil McGrane referred 15 cases of noncitizen voter registration to the U.S. Department of Justice following a state-wide eligibility review.
Idaho Secretary of State Phil McGrane confirmed the state is using the Department of Homeland Security's Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements database to verify voter citizenship before the November election. The review followed a July 2024 executive order from Governor Brad Little.
State officials examined over one million registered voters, initially flagging 745 potential noncitizens. After individual record examinations, the list was narrowed to 36 people. Following opportunities for these individuals to prove their citizenship, the state referred 34 cases to the Idaho State Police for criminal investigation.
Of those investigations, 15 cases were subsequently referred to the U.S. Department of Justice for prosecution. McGrane stated that while the verification system was previously costly and clunky, recent improvements under the Trump administration now enable free bulk searches and the integration of more federal records.
