UK Injury Payouts for E-Scooters and E-Bikes Top £110 Million

The Motor Insurers Bureau reports that injury payouts for micromobility accidents have more than doubled in a year, contributing to higher motor insurance premiums for the public.

The Motor Insurers Bureau (MIB) reports that injury payouts for accidents involving e-bikes and e-scooters in the United Kingdom have surpassed £110 million. This total rose from £51 million over the previous 12 months, with a single claim for a child's catastrophic injuries reaching £20 million. Since 2015, the MIB has processed over 700 claims related to these vehicles.

Because the MIB is funded by levies from insurance companies, these rising costs have contributed to increased motor insurance premiums for the general public. MIB officials note a significant gap in public awareness, as many users do not realize that riding privately owned e-scooters on public roads is illegal and leaves them uninsured.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander suggested that new legislation could be introduced if parliamentary time allows. Meanwhile, the government of the United Kingdom has reiterated existing laws. Police continue to seize and destroy hundreds of illegal vehicles annually, and some high-profile cases have resulted in prison sentences for dangerous driving and causing death.
