UK Government Plans £2,500 Compensation for Households Near Power Lines

The Government of the United Kingdom plans to introduce a compensation scheme providing up to £2,500 to households located within 500 metres of new or significantly upgraded electricity transmission infrastructure. This includes pylons, overhead power lines, major substations, and converter stations.

Eligible households will receive £250 annually for up to 10 years, typically distributed as two £125 discounts on energy bills. To qualify, homes must have existed before construction began on projects starting on or after March 10, 2025. Landlords receiving these funds will generally be legally required to pass the discounts to their tenants.

The initiative aims to reduce public opposition to the electricity grid expansion necessary for connecting renewable energy projects, such as offshore wind farms, to the national network. Pending parliamentary approval of the legislation, the government expects payments to begin in the first half of 2027.
