UAE Honors flydubai Crew After Mid-Air Terrorist Attack
President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan awarded the Order of Zayed II to flydubai crew who stopped a co-pilot's attempt to crash a plane into Israel.
President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan conferred the First Class Order of Zayed II on Indian Captain Smit Machchhar and the crew of flydubai flight FZ1073 for their actions during a mid-air emergency on September 30. The honors were presented by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum during a presidential reception attended by senior UAE leadership.
During the flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, an Omani co-pilot attacked Captain Machchhar with a crash axe in an attempt to seize control of the Boeing 737. The struggle caused the aircraft to plunge between 14,000 and 17,000 feet in less than 30 seconds. Despite sustaining serious injuries, Machchhar unlocked the cockpit door, enabling passengers and crew members to overpower and restrain the suspect. Two other pilots on board then diverted the aircraft to a safe landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
UAE prosecutors described the incident as a terrorist plot inspired by the September 11 attacks, alleging the co-pilot intended to crash the plane into Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv. While some reports indicated the motive was initially unclear, the Cabinet of Israel identified the attacker as an Omani national and announced a civilian bravery award for Machchhar.
