Michael Marra and Joe Fagan Contest Scottish Labour Leadership
Scottish Labour confirmed Michael Marra and Joe Fagan as the two candidates to succeed Anas Sarwar in a leadership ballot ending September 17.
The Scottish Labour party has confirmed that Michael Marra and Joe Fagan will contest the leadership election following the resignation of Anas Sarwar. Sarwar stepped down last month to join the House of Lords and the government of Andy Burnham, a transition that occurred after the party suffered its worst-ever Holyrood election result.
Michael Marra, the party's finance spokesperson, and Joe Fagan, an MSP for the South of Scotland and former council leader, are the only candidates who met the nomination threshold of three MSPs, three MPs, and two trade unions. Monica Lennon also sought the leadership but failed to secure the necessary nominations despite support from the Unison and Unite unions. Following her exclusion, Lennon criticized the party culture as quite nasty and questioned whether any transgender members remained in the organization.
Dame Jackie Baillie is currently serving as acting leader while the party prepares for the vote. The ballot of members and affiliated supporters opens on August 28 and closes on September 17, with the final result scheduled for announcement on September 19. Both Marra and Fagan have called for party renewal, with Marra emphasizing a need to rediscover the party's soul and Fagan focusing on rebuilding the organization for working people.
