Campaigns End for Nagaon Lok Sabha By-Election in Assam
The National Democratic Alliance and opposing parties concluded campaigning for the Nagaon by-election, with polling scheduled for October 6 and counting on October 9.
Campaigning concluded on Sunday for the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election in Assam, with polling set for October 6 and results expected on October 9. The seat became vacant in March 2026 after Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi resigned to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, spearheaded a massive campaign blitz for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate Debashis Sharma. Sarma addressed 15 public meetings across eight Assembly segments, while the NDA coordinated over 1,100 meetings and simultaneous padyatras across 2,309 polling booths. The BJP utilized its Mahila, Yuva, and Minority wings to conduct thousands of courtyard meetings to consolidate support.
The contest features three primary candidates: the BJP's Debashis Sharma, the Congress's Sibamoni Bora, and Badruddin Ajmal of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF). Following 2023 delimitation, Muslim voters now comprise approximately 55-58% of the 1.9 million voters, a demographic shift that has shaped party strategies.
Confidence remains high among the competing factions. Sarma predicted a BJP victory margin of 2.5 lakh to 3 lakh votes, while Congress State President Gaurav Gogoi expressed confidence in retaining the seat. Badruddin Ajmal claimed a victory margin of approximately 1 million votes.
