ATSB Investigates Safety Incidents at Sydney Airport

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is investigating four major safety incidents at Sydney airport that occurred in July and August 2026, including runway incursions and near misses. Preliminary reports indicate that Sydney recorded the highest confliction rate per aircraft movement post-Covid among major airports, approximately 20% above the national average.

Investigators identified staffing gaps and predicted fatigue risks as recurring factors. In one specific incident, two aircraft came within 120 meters of each other during a controller's handover for a required rest break. Airservices Australia roster modelling had previously predicted elevated fatigue risks for staff.

Transport Minister Catherine King announced the creation of an independent assurance panel for Sydney air traffic control in response to the findings. While the Civil Aviation Safety Authority stated the incidents do not present an immediate safety risk, the ATSB expects to release final investigation reports in 2027.
