Blackstone Faces Setbacks in AI Data Center Investments
Blackstone Inc. faces investor skepticism and failed IPOs as the market shifts focus from rapid AI growth to cash flow and asset depreciation.
Public investors are questioning the long-term shareholder value of AI data center operators, known as neoclouds, creating uncertainty for Blackstone Inc. The asset manager has encountered several setbacks in its strategy to monetize these investments, including the failed $30 billion initial public offering of Firmus Grid Ltd., a company in which Blackstone holds a 6.7% equity stake.
Further complications have emerged with AirTrunk, Blackstone's largest investment in Asia. The Australian data center operator delayed its planned IPO of a real estate investment trust in Singapore because yields were unattractive compared to US Treasuries. These events reflect a broader market shift where investors are prioritizing break-even points and free cash flow over rapid revenue growth.
Specific concerns center on the rapid depreciation of processing chips and the risk of impairments, which investors fear could erode residual value after debt repayments. Despite these challenges, Blackstone continues to seek monetization of its equity stakes in Lambda and AirTrunk, both of which are currently planning to go public in 2027.
