Michael Burry Warns AI Boom Is Catastrophically Vulnerable
Investor Michael Burry claims the AI sector faces potential collapse after analyzing Anthropic's IPO filing and its massive compute power debt.
Michael Burry argues that the artificial intelligence boom is "catastrophically vulnerable" following an analysis of Anthropic's IPO filing. Burry points to a severe imbalance between the company's revenue and its obligations for computing power, noting that Anthropic owes $537 billion, a figure that could reach $800 billion including pending deals.
With annual revenue of approximately $65 billion, the company maintains a debt-to-revenue ratio of roughly 12x. Burry highlights a concerning trend where sales growth slowed from 144% last quarter to 46% this quarter, while compute costs simultaneously increased by 78%.
Much of this debt is owed to major technology providers Amazon, Alphabet, and Microsoft. Burry contends that while this financial structure remains sustainable during periods of rapid growth, a single slowdown could trigger a broader collapse of the AI sector.
