The Kroger Co. Offers Lowest Prices Among Major U.S. Grocery Chains

The Kroger Co. ranked as the most affordable U.S. grocery chain in a price comparison study of store-brand essentials conducted by Restaurant Furniture Plus.

A price comparison study by Restaurant Furniture Plus found that The Kroger Co. offered the lowest overall prices among four major U.S. grocery chains. The study analyzed 15 store-brand everyday essentials, revealing Kroger had the cheapest total basket cost at $30.00 and the lowest prices on 10 of the 15 products, including eggs, sugar, spaghetti, and various pantry items.

Walmart Inc. ranked second with a basket cost of $30.95, offering the lowest prices for chicken breast, white rice, and canned black beans. Aldi Inc. followed in third with a total of $33.15, providing the cheapest whole milk and strong value in store-brand dairy. Albertsons Companies Inc. ranked fourth with the highest basket cost at $35.58.

These results follow a May announcement by Kroger CEO Greg Foran, who planned to cut prices on thousands of items by reducing internal expenses and improving technology. The competition arrives as a separate Urban Institute study reports that food prices have risen 32% over the last five years, leading more than one in four working-age Americans to rely on credit cards for groceries.
