Hungarian Fighter Jets Escort Wizz Air Plane After Bomb Threat

Hungarian Gripen fighter jets escorted a Wizz Air flight from London to Budapest after a bomb threat triggered a NATO air policing alert.

Hungarian Gripen fighter jets escorted a Wizz Air passenger plane to Budapest on November 2 after a bomb threat forced the aircraft to divert. The Airbus A321neo, which departed London Luton Airport for Sofia, Bulgaria, requested an emergency landing at Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport after receiving the threat while in flight.

The incident triggered a NATO air policing ALPHA alert, leading the Hungarian Armed Forces to deploy fighter jets within minutes. The aircraft landed safely at 12:08 p.m. local time and taxied to a designated stand. The operation required the temporary closure of Runway 2, which redirected other airport traffic.

Upon landing, Hungarian police, firefighters, and counter-terrorism units conducted security checks on the passengers and the aircraft. Wizz Air stated it is cooperating fully with authorities. It remains unclear who was responsible for the threat or if any suspicious objects were discovered during the inspection.
