New Zealand Household Living Costs Rise 3.2 Percent

Household living costs for the average New Zealand household increased by 3.2 percent in the 12 months ending in the June 2026 quarter. This marks an acceleration from the 2.1 percent increase recorded in the March 2026 quarter. While the overall consumer price index reached 4.1 percent, the actual cost of living for households remained lower because interest payments dropped by more than 15 percent over the same period.

Nicola Growden, a spokesperson for Stats NZ, identified a 27.5 percent surge in petrol prices as the primary driver of the increase. This spike accounted for nearly one-third of the annual rise in household living costs. The fuel price volatility coincided with supply disruptions resulting from a Middle East conflict that began in late February 2026.

Stats NZ noted that the impact of these rising fuel costs was not uniform across the population. Lower-spending households experienced a disproportionately larger impact because petrol represents a higher percentage of their total expenditure compared to wealthier households.
