Union Security Workers Authorize Strike at Major California Tech Offices

Union security workers serving the California offices of several major technology firms, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, and Salesforce, authorized an unfair-labor-practice strike on Wednesday. The workers are employed by staffing agencies such as Allied Universal, Securitas, and GardaWorld, rather than the tech firms themselves.

SEIU-United Service Workers West, which represents approximately 14,000 security workers, is bargaining with these agencies for improved wages, benefits, and training across Los Angeles County, Silicon Valley, and the San Francisco Bay Area. To mark the authorization, security officers marched through San Francisco near the offices of OpenAI and Anthropic, though it remains unclear if or when a full strike will begin.

The threat of labor action has already impacted operations. Anthropic requested that its employees work from home last week due to concerns over an imminent strike by Allied Universal.
