Escalating hostilities in Yemen have forced 142,000 people to flee their homes, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. The violence has severely strained the country's fragile health system, forcing some hospitals to suspend emergency obstetric care to prioritize the treatment of wounded patients.
Between August 1 and September 26, the United Nations Office on Human Rights verified 42 deaths and 115 injuries, noting that children accounted for half of the fatalities. The World Health Organization warned that overcrowding and poor sanitation at displacement sites are increasing the risk of disease outbreaks. This year, officials have reported 7,800 suspected cholera cases and over 22,000 suspected measles cases.
While UN partners have reached 115,000 people and mobilized nearly 20 million U.S. dollars in emergency funding, medical supplies are dwindling. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reports that urgent additional funding is required to address the growing crisis.
