South Portland Terminates Contract With Flock Safety Surveillance

The South Portland City Council voted on Thursday to immediately terminate its contract with Flock Safety, leading to the removal of seven AI-powered license plate reading surveillance cameras. The decision follows significant pushback from residents and council members regarding privacy and the company's data retention practices.

Critics specifically raised alarms over reports that the company shares data with Immigration and Customs Enforcement and border patrol agents. While the city recently limited data access to eight Maine departments and denied the cameras were used for immigration enforcement, council members determined the system remained too invasive for the community.

Local police defended the technology, stating the cameras were valuable tools for locating stolen vehicles, finding missing persons, and advancing criminal investigations. Despite these operational benefits, the council concluded that the risks associated with the data-centric model of the surveillance system outweighed the utility.
