Barclays Maps Life Insurer Exposure to AI Debt
Barclays analyzed how life insurance companies are funding the AI infrastructure boom through increased investments in private credit.
An analysis by Barclays has mapped the exposure of life insurance companies to debt tied to the artificial intelligence capital expenditure boom. The study comes amid warnings that insurers are shifting more capital into private credit, which some estimates suggest now accounts for approximately one-third of all U.S. insurer investments.
CoreWeave co-founder Brannin McBee recently claimed that "unlimited" insurance capital is available to fund the build-out of AI infrastructure. This trend has drawn criticism from observers who warn of a potential private credit bubble. Critics argue that if these investments fail, policyholders will bear the financial losses while private equity firms retain their management fees.
