Morrisons Cuts Nearly 5,000 Jobs Amid Turnaround Plan

Morrisons reduced its average monthly workforce by 4,912 employees in the year ending October 2025 to cut costs and combat market share losses.

Morrisons reduced its average monthly workforce by 4,912 employees in the year ending October 2025 as part of a broader cost-cutting effort. The reductions included more than 4,200 store positions, with additional cuts occurring across food manufacturing and distribution. The company attributed these losses to the downsizing of the Rathbones bakery business, a restructuring of the retail people team, and the closure of its convenience newspaper home delivery service.

Management clarified that no additional redundancy program was implemented in stores, noting that staff numbers decreased primarily through natural attrition. These measures are part of a turnaround plan led by Chief Executive Rami Baitieh to address market share losses to competitors Aldi and Lidl.

Financially, the supermarket chain reported a 2.8% revenue increase to £15.7 billion, but faced a pre-tax loss of £629 million before exceptional items. Reported net debt rose to £7.52 billion. Despite these losses, the company maintained an underlying EBITDA of £835 million, which it credited to resilience against inflation, government cost increases, and a cyber incident.
