EU Launches Drone Alliance With Ukraine For Defense

The European Union launched an industry-led drone alliance with Ukraine to develop production and counter-drone capabilities by 2027.

The European Commission launched a call for manufacturers, start-ups, and drone end-users to join a new industry-led drone alliance with Ukraine. The initiative seeks to build comprehensive European capabilities in drone production and counter-drone defense, serving as a reaction to Russian threats and uncertainty regarding United States policy.

This project integrates into the broader European Drone Defence Initiative, previously known as a drone wall. The commission intends for the system to be operational by the end of 2026 and fully functional by 2027. The effort follows multiple incidents where Russian drones entered the airspace of EU member states, including Belgium, Denmark, and Germany.

Ukraine provides critical battlefield experience in drone deployment and counter-drone technologies as a partner in the alliance. Separate from this industry initiative, Germany and Britain continue to co-chair a drone coalition within the Ukraine Contact Group to coordinate direct support for Kyiv. Interested companies must register by May 25 to be considered for founding membership.
