Electoral Commission Corrects Voter Roll Processing Errors

The Electoral Commission added 6,300 eligible voters and removed 1,200 ineligible individuals from the electoral roll following a processing error.

The Electoral Commission added approximately 6,300 eligible voters to the electoral roll after a processing error incorrectly required individuals on residence class visas to provide unnecessary immigration status information. Chief Electoral Officer Karl Le Quesne apologized for the breakdown in processes, stating that the system should have flagged these individuals as eligible to enrol.

During the same correction process, the Commission identified roughly 1,200 ineligible individuals who were mistakenly added to the roll, including people with expired visas or those on temporary entry class visas. These individuals will be removed before the official count. Le Quesne confirmed that if any of these ineligible individuals have already voted, their votes will be disallowed.

The Commission is currently notifying affected individuals through phone calls, text messages, and emails. Le Quesne noted that while the error was disappointing, the agency has strengthened integrity checks since the last election to maintain the overall quality of the electoral roll.
