Belgium Warns Europe of Russian Hybrid Threats and Dark Winter
Belgian Defence Minister Theo Francken warned Europe of a dark winter and urged nations to scale up air defenses against Russian hybrid threats.
Belgian Defence Minister Theo Francken warned that Europe faces a "dark winter" due to mounting Russian hybrid threats, identifying Russia as the primary security risk to Belgium and the broader continent. Speaking at the Euronews Defence and Space Summit in Brussels, Francken urged European nations to expand their industrial bases, increase production, and scale up air defenses to counter Russian air attacks. He specifically emphasized the necessity of accessing Ukrainian technology to combat modern drones.
These warnings coincide with reports of a Russian campaign utilizing drones and covert UAVs launched from a shadow fleet. United States intelligence recently alerted France, Italy, and Spain regarding a planned Russian attack involving Gerbera drones launched from shipping containers in the Mediterranean.
In response to the potential escalation, Central Intelligence Agency Director John Ratcliffe visited Moscow for undisclosed talks. Ratcliffe warned the Kremlin that such actions could trigger a larger conflict. The warnings come as the Belgian government doubles its defense spending following decades of underinvestment.
