Tamil Nadu Government Presents Maiden Budget Amid Political Tension

Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson presented the maiden 2026-27 budget for the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led coalition government on August 5, 2026. The budget introduces the Vettri Tamilagam Vision Plan, including 2,000 crore for an AI policy and the establishment of India's first AI City. Other key allocations include 2,000 crore for laptops through the Vetri Madikanini Thittam, 3,200 crore for student hostels, and 560 crore for the Thaai Maaman thanga modhiram thittam to provide gold rings for newborns. The administration also committed to 200 units of free monthly electricity and expanded women's welfare, including free bus travel.

These expenditures follow the government's release of a White Paper stating the state's outstanding debt has reached 13.18 lakh crore. Agriculture Minister R. Vinoth is scheduled to present a separate Agriculture Budget on August 6, focusing on irrigation and rural economy.

The legislative session opened amid significant political friction. Opposition leader Udhayanidhi Stalin arrived at the assembly following his arrest and subsequent release by the Madras High Court. Stalin characterized his detention, which involved alleged remarks about actress Trisha, as a diversion intended to hide administrative failures and farmers' distress. M.K. Stalin further described the arrest as political vendetta meant to exclude the opposition from the session.
