UK Energy Minister Pledges Reform as Heating Oil Prices Surge

Energy Minister Polly Billington announced plans to reform the heating oil sector after prices rose 47% since July, impacting rural households in Suffolk.

Energy Minister Polly Billington announced plans to reform the heating oil sector to increase competition and improve consumer protection after national fuel prices rose 47% since July. The surge has hit rural areas like Suffolk particularly hard, where 13.2% of homes rely on the fuel and prices have exceeded 110p per litre.

Rhys Johnson of Fueltool attributed the price spike to attacks on tankers around the Strait of Hormuz, noting that heating oil follows diesel pricing closely. In response to the crisis, Suffolk County Council is providing financial aid through its Local Welfare Assistance Scheme and grant payments for off-grid households to cover heating and food costs.

Conservative MP James Cartlidge has demanded a government response to a Competition and Markets Authority investigation into the market. Cartlidge argued that the Labour government's ban on new North Sea drilling forces reliance on imports from Norway and the Middle East, exacerbating the cost-of-living crisis. He proposed resuming domestic drilling, freezing fuel duty in the upcoming Budget, and scrapping the Family Farm Tax to improve national energy security.
