AI Agents Use Cryptocurrency for Autonomous Microtransactions
AI agents are conducting autonomous agentic commerce via the x402 protocol on the Base network to purchase data and model outputs through high-speed microtransactions.
AI agents are increasingly engaging in autonomous agentic commerce by utilizing the x402 protocol on the Coinbase Base network. This shift allows machines to bypass traditional human-led processes, such as API registration and account creation, to purchase token-level outputs from data sources and frontier AI models.

On-chain settlements sometimes exceed eight transactions in two seconds, a volume that would be economically unviable on traditional payment rails like credit cards due to base fees and surcharges.
Geographic data reveals a significant concentration of this activity, with over 88% of geolocated AI inference payments originating from wallets in the United States. In contrast, wallets based in China are largely absent from this specific ecosystem of AI-to-AI commerce.
