Australia Condemns China Over Missile Test and Maritime Clashes

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong condemned a Chinese submarine test of a nuclear-capable ballistic missile in the South Pacific, describing the launch as destabilizing. During a meeting in Manila with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Wong stated that Australia received insufficient notice of the test, which involved a dummy warhead landing between the Solomon Islands, Nauru, and Tuvalu. A dozen Pacific Island countries also denounced the test for violating regional nuclear-free goals.

These tensions coincide with a physical confrontation at the Second Thomas Shoal in the South China Sea on July 20 and 21. The incident between the China Coast Guard and the Philippine Navy left a Filipino sailor injured. The Armed Forces of the Philippines accused China of reacting violently, while the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China characterized the encounter as malicious attacks by Philippine personnel.

In response to the volatility, Wong announced a 413 million peso donation of drone technology and training to the Philippine Coast Guard. The United States State Department and the European Union issued statements condemning China's actions. China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded by demanding that Australia stop exaggerating tensions and inciting confrontation, while spokesperson Lin Jian claimed a small handful of countries rush to oppose China regardless of the facts.
