Experts Warn of Economic Bubble and Existential AI Risks
Industry leaders and economists warn that rapid AI adoption is creating a trillion-dollar investment bubble, threatening millions of jobs and posing existential risks to humanity.
Industry experts and economists are debating the systemic risks and societal impacts of rapid artificial intelligence evolution. At the AI Expo Africa in Sandton, Keith Jones of SW7 described the current AI market as the fastest-moving in history, noting that businesses are struggling with human resistance to behavioral changes while shifting toward token hierarchies to manage costs.
Economic concerns have intensified as Paul Krugman warned that massive capital investment in AI data centers is crowding out other sectors, potentially displacing 10 million jobs and concentrating wealth among a small elite. Krugman cautioned that the boom could be a bubble that plunges the United States into a liquidity trap if it bursts. Simultaneously, whistleblower Jacob Coxon warned that the current rate of progress poses an existential threat to humanity.
Technical and security risks are also emerging. AI tools are being used to uncover software vulnerabilities, which recently forced the shutdown of government websites in Europe. Tech workers have criticized frontier labs—including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, SpaceX, Meta, and Microsoft—for using doom marketing to sustain a multi-trillion dollar investment bubble. While leaders like Sam Altman and Elon Musk have called for government regulation, critics argue these efforts are designed to stifle smaller competitors through increased red tape.
